Court reporting is a great career and you have plenty of job opportunities when you train to be a court reporter. Court reporters are in high demand and you can work for the courts or a law firm or you can take the independent route. If you are interested in court reporting, you will need to learn some essential skills that will help you be more productive.

If you want to be a court reporter, it  is crucial that you have good spelling and grammar skills. Your English skills need to be excellent, because the job involves editing and producing transcripts of court proceedings. You will also need to learn stenography which is a special kind of shorthand that allows you to record court proceedings in real time.

As a court reporter, you need to have a basic understanding of some legal concepts and know what some of the specialized terms mean. Your concentration skills have to be excellent because you are spending lots of time concentrating and listening to people speak and your mind just can't wander if you want to record their speaking properly. You have to be able to sit through hours of testimony and record it accurately.

You will need to go to school to learn court reporting skills. You can learn the basic skills in as little as a year, but if you want to make more money, you should go for a two year associate's degree or certificate. You can start off with a decent salary once you get your certificate and you can even work remotely from home in some cases.

Learning stenography is probably the most difficult part of becoming a court reporter. You have to know punctuation and grammar to be good at it, and the more specialized legal vocabulary that you know, the better. You will also learn how to use special software and stenography machines that help the transcription process go faster. You also need to learn special software that helps you with the production of the final transcript. The more skills that you know, the better off you will be when it comes to court reporting.

Court reporting can be a very rewarding career, but it is important to get your skills down. If you don't have the skills, you are not going to be very effective. The more skills you have, the more money you can earn.
